Posts: 4 Aug 20, 2003 08:25:37	Tags : dogs, training, overweight, excerise Hi. My dog has gained some weight, I'd like to get him down 5lbs before he gets fatter. Part of the reason he gained weight is because he's been in the house most of the summer..HIS choice, not mine. It's too hot for him, he hates it. But He runs and walks around the house all day, chasing the other dog and playing fetch.. but ya guess that wasn't enough.. Anyways, thought I might try and train him to use the tredmil for exercise. I KNOW it's possible, I seen dogs do it before. I can get him to jump on it if I'm holding a treat.. I can get him to take a treat off the tredmil.. I tried holding the treat out and making him walk (like the old cartoon horse and carrot trick lol) But I DON'T want to have to give him treats every 3 seconds, that's kind of counterproductive. Once he gets the treat, he jumps off anyways... He doesn't walk right either, his but wobbles..lol If I put it too slow, he stands, steps. stands, steps.. If I put it sort of fast, he's all over the place and then jumps off when he gets the treat.. Help! Edited by Suse: Clarification of subject title, added search tags to original post. Posts: 4346 Aug 20, 2003 17:11:03 FF&F Staff Administrator Upside Down and Backwards In Ozland	I think walking your dog after dark when it's is cooler would be healthier and easier then doing the tread mill thing.

Posts: 7811 Aug 21, 2003 11:06:45 FF&F Staff Administrator, Co-Owner The Cats' Slave	A walk when the sun goes down, as Joanne suggested or before the sun comes up will be much easier than trying to train the dog to do a treadmill. You might want to try evaluating his eating habits. Less treats or a lite dog food may be appropriate for the months he is not so active. This will help keep the weight off also. Our dogs love to get their excerise in the early morning. We have one, Penny, who was very overweight when we adopted her last March. Since then, she has lost five pounds with us doing nothing more than cutting back on her rations, giving only 3 treats daily, and letting her exercise twice a day during the cooler part of the morning and evening.

Posts: 20 May 12, 2008 07:49:12 Littermate	The best way, if you're able, is to use it with the dog. just like taking him for a walk..And most treats is very bad for a dog, very high in fat, and other junk. I make my own dog treats, so I know what's in them, and I can even have one with them.. I have a couple of good recipes that I use, and the dogs love them...I'll post them if somebody can tell me where.

Posts: 4560 May 12, 2008 08:30:39 Critter Companion	Welcome to FF&F! I think walking the dog would be more beneficial for both of you unless there is a reason you can't do it. Not only is it good exercise but it's a bonding thing as well. Early morning and late evenings are best when the weather is hot. Hot roads are not good for paw pads and can actually blister them...many people don't realize that.

You may post any recipes in the Dog Health forum below. shitzuwonder, warm welcomes to FF&F! As for training your dog on a treadmill, my reasoning that I posted earlier still stands. Another point I'd like to bring up is that people will push the dog too far. Dogs are dogs and shouldn't be expected to perform the same as humans. Use common sense when excerising your pets.
